This isn't such a problem for the bigger businesses who have qualified technicians in-house to constantly be vigilant against the threats, but what's the small and medium business owner supposed to do?
There are varying degree of threats, some obnoxious, some can cause critical problems and cost you both lost time and money and some can literally ruin your business. And don't forget those strange productivity problems, like inexplicably slow computers and those that crash or freeze just when you need a file desperately.
So what's the solution? There are dozens of outfits, including us, who claim to be experts and say you should call them to come in and "save" you from all the scary monsters lurking out there. How do you decide who you can turn to? We humbly suggest you review this checklist as a part of your decision for picking a technical support provider.
- Your provider should be a certified Microsoft Partner. This means they pass certain technical and business-stability criteria.
- The technician should also be Microsoft Certified. This means they have passed difficult tests and have studied computers for hundreds or thousands of hours and are therefore qualified in theory.
- The technician you see first should have at least five years experience in the field and is therefore qualified in the real world.
- The technician should be able to relate to you in business terms and have other business clients that are about your size.
- The firm should be willing to send one of their best technicians to speak with you and look at your existing computer and network situation for up to a day or more determine if you have anything to really worry about. There should be no cost or obligation for this service.
